Symptom vs Underlying Disease

When you are around poverty, try to identify what you are observing. When you see a stream of human waste running right through a community are you seeing a symptom or an underlying disease?  When you see a mother use that same stream to fill cans of water for drinking, cooking, and bathing, what are you seeing?

Once you begin identifying the differences between symptoms and underlying problems, you start to see different solutions than the conventional aid approaches.
